National Championships Continue 'Super Tournament' Format in 2025
Following the resounding success of the inaugural 'Super Tournament' format in Newcastle in 2024, Ice Hockey Australia (IHA) is proud to announce that the National Championships are back in the same format for second year. In 2025, the National Championships will again feature four divisions, showcasing the best young ice hockey talent from across the country.
The prestigious tournament will take place at Cockburn Ice Arena in Perth, providing players, coaches, and fans with an exciting venue to witness the next generation of Australian ice hockey stars. The 2025 event will be held over ten days, with the following schedule:
-
Boxall and Defris Divisions: 10-15 July at Cockburn Ice Arena
-
Ginsberg and Tange Divisions: 15-20 July at Cockburn Ice Arena
The 'Super Tournament' serve as a vital platform for emerging athletes to compete at a high level, refine their skills, and gain valuable experience in a national tournament setting. Building on the strong foundation set in 2024, this year’s event will continue to raise the bar for ice hockey in Australia.
Additionally, following the Defris tournament, head coaches will select a Youth Trans-Tasman squad that will play in a series against New Zealand in Melbourne, Oct 2025. This opportunity further enhances the national championship format by creating additional pathways into national teams.
Adam Woolnough, General Manager of Ice Hockey Australia, expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming event:
“The success of last year’s Super Tournament (National Championships) in Newcastle was a testament to the passion and commitment of our young athletes, coaches, and the wider ice hockey community. We are thrilled to see the tournament return in the same format 2025, bringing together even more talent from across Australia. The move to Cockburn Ice Arena in Perth presents an exciting opportunity to grow the game in Western Australia and showcase the next generation of Australian ice hockey stars. We can’t wait to see the tournament unfold.”
With an increasing number of junior players participating in ice hockey across the country, the National Championships play a crucial role in fostering development, sportsmanship, and high-performance competition. Ice Hockey Australia encourages families and fans to attend and support our rising stars as they compete for national glory.
