Expression of Interest Women's Trans Tasman - IIHF Women's World Championship

Ice Hockey Australia is calling for nominations for the National Women’s Team to represent Australia at both the Inaugural Women’s Trans Tasman Competition 19th Oct – 20th Oct 2024 and IIHF Women's World Championship Division II, Group B, held in Dunedin, New Zealand 14th April 2025 to 20th April 2025.

We are looking for those players who have continued to develop high-performance skills, gameplay, fitness and attitude and who believe they are ready to perform at this level of competition, considering the short lead-up time. All eligible players with the ability, drive, and commitment to represent Australia at the highest Women’s Ice Hockey level are encouraged to apply.

IMPORTANT: Attendance and availability for Trans Tasman competition is highly encouraged, but not mandatory for World Championship selection. All players with the proper qualifications are welcome to submit an expression of interest (EOI), whether it is for one or both events. 

Details:

Trans Tasman 2024

  • 17th Oct 2024: Depart for Newcastle NSW
  • 18th Oct 2024: Training Sessions
  • 19th Oct – 20th Oct 2024: Trans Tasman Games

IIHF World Championship 2025

  • 6th April 2025: Training Camp Arrival Day
  • 7th - 11th April 2025: Training Camp
  • 12th April 2025: Depart for Dunedin, New Zealand
  • 14th - 20th April 2025: World Championships 
  • 21st April 2025: Return to Australia

Essential IHA Selection Criteria:

  • Must have played or selected to play in the AWIHL or State Team 2023/2024, been a member of the IHA Women’s Team in 2024 or been playing in an equivalent overseas IIHF sanctioned league.
  • Must be a registered member of IHA - Not mandatory at this stage. Membership can be acquired upon selection.
  • IIHF World Championships only - Comply with the Eligibility Requirements of the International Ice Hockey Federation (details here
  • Must have a valid Australian passport ( in process is valid as long as the passport is obtained three (3) months prior to Depart date to the World Championship).
  • Must be at least eighteen* (18) years old by 31st December 2025.
  • *Players who do not meet the minimum age requirements but will have their 16th or 17th birthday in 2025 may participate as underage, following IIHF Bylaw 10.6.2.

Commitment:

  • Selected players must commit to all pre-departure fitness, skill and conditioning programs as set by the coaching and performance staff.
  • All players must be fully compliant with requested reporting, paperwork, team meetings and any other off-ice performance requirements as requested or set by the Coach, Medical Staff, Team Manager or IHA.

Costs  

  • For Trans Tasman the cost will be a fixed $500 fee.
  • For the World Championship program cost is estimated to be no more than $4,500 for each player. This includes all flights and ground transport, accommodation in Melbourne and New Zealand and meals (NOTE: this does not include equipment, extra snacks or spending money, which will be at the player’s expense).
  • Players are encouraged to apply for State and Local government and other eligible individual sporting grants to assist with the offset of these costs.

Selection:  

  • Trans Tansman selection will be via EOI.
  • IIHF World Championship team selection will be via this application + panel selection consisting, but not limited to, the Head Coach, Assistant Coach, and additional IHA High Performance Accredited Coach.
  • For World Championships - player selection will be based on performance during the 2024-2025 AWIHL season (or equivalent overseas IIHF-sanctioned league), Trans Tasman competition, off-ice and on-ice testing, and relevant past performances at previous world championships.
  • Players based overseas will be required to provide video footage of their game play during the season. Video footage can be send directly to the points of contacts in the EOI confirmation email.
