Team Victoria Wins IHA’S 2009 National Tange U19 Championship
Team Victoria (VICs) recorded a 2 - 0 hard fought, end-to-end game against arch rivals Team New South Wales (NSW) and honors as IHA's 2009 National Tange U19 Gold Medal Champions in Newcastle yesterday.
The VICs, Jeremy Brown, scored both goals in the contest with his first coming at 10:15 in the first period unassisted. NSW fought hard to counter, hitting the post on one occasion and failing to get one past VICs net under Andrew Keogh.
With the VICs controlling the shooting zone in their end and Andrew Keogh turning away every NSW's scoring opportunity, at 08:27 Brown struck again. After receiving a pass from line mate Jamey Bourke, and dumping a high clearing puck towards NSW net minder Chris Gleeson for a line change, the bouncing puck caught Gleeson off guard and entered the net through the Gleeson's pads for the VICs second and final goal of the game.
Despite NSW shortening their bench in the third, the VIC's closed every NSW opportunity with continued tempo and close checking.
Shots on goal were 13 for 2 on Gleeson and 13 for 0 on Keogh.
In the Bronze Medal game, Team South Australia (SA) took the Bronze behind net minder Nick Prettejohn with a score of 4 - 1 over Team Western Australia (WA). SA's Andrew Scott opened the scoring for SA at 06:17 of the first when he walked in all alone unassisted and slapped the puck over the shoulder of WA's Ayden Millward. At 02:33 Wehebe Darge struck again on a pass from SA defenceman Jake McLeod to make it 2 - 0. With 00:31 remaining WA's Jordan Kyros combined with Kaden Goulds to narrow the gap 2 - 1.
The second period remained scoreless as both teams went end-to-end to get the upper hand. At 11:29 of the third, Steve Best scored a blister unassisted to increase SA's lead to 3 - 1. With 00:18 remaining in the game, Andrew Scott struck for his second on a passing combination from Steve Best and Wehebe Darge to give SA their 4 - 1 win.
Shots on goal were 25 for 4 on Ayden Millward and 17 for 1 on SA's Nick Prettejohn.
Highest point scorer for the Championship was VICs Jamey Bourke. Best Goaltender was WA's Ayden Millward.
